In today’s economy, youth need a long-term vision for their career development,  and to be accompanied by mentors to take practical steps to realize it.  Recognizing that youth unemployment is both an economic and social problem, we have developed a program of learning and action that teaches practical job search skills, and helps youth identify and develop their talents in the context of contributing to their communities. These efforts have crystallized in a program where youth come together to consider their talents and social reality, learn job search skills, set career goals and plan their next steps. They then gain practical experience and overcome systemic employment barriers such as lack of Canadian and/or work experience by participating in “service-learning” initiatives in their communities. Participants are accompanied through private coaching and group support. Environments are created where youth form strong bonds of friendship and assist each other by sharing experiences. Some participants go on to organize and facilitate future workshops, allowing them to gain job experience. To date, 75% of the participants have found jobs in their field or have chosen a career path. In the words of our participants, the program gives them a “broader outlook” on work and life.
